Hometask1: an unintentional throw

The coronavirus locks down limits my movement in the house, and I had no idea about making a spectacular throw of a piece of A4 paper. Therefore, form one extreme to another, I decided to do an unintentional daily throw that is a chill coincident. This piece of video is a record or my daily struggle of doing Differential Equations. Special thanks to my cousin as the guest actress who changed her pajama for the first time this week to help me filming the clip.

Steph Curry Makes His Return

Here is the link to my shot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kHncQh8CWhn192kCiyTCd4qsbkQAIZlE/view?usp=sharing. To honor the Coronavirus induced NBA suspension, I decided to shoot my paper ball like a basketball. Steph Curry had just returned to playing in games after his hand injury in the fall, so I decided to honor his return as well by taking my shot from 3 point range. This task turned out to be more difficult than I’d expected, but the only irritated person was my sister, who was forced to record my 50 consecutive tries in NJ’s 40 degree weather. This assignment was a blessing in disguise because I went outside for the first time in days, and I also got to relieve my quarantine boredom for a few minutes. I think this shot is easily one of the most interesting so far, but I’m curious to see the rest of my classmates’ performances.

Paper around the World

I created the most epic paper toss into a bin. The paper makes its journey across my house. There are many rooms and locations outdoors that this paper has to travel through just to get to the bin. The bin is so far away that it has to go in through the house, outside and around the house, back inside and up the stairs all in one toss! It was so spectacular I had to do a celebration dance. https://vm.tiktok.com/G1goRe/ Watch my TikTok to see this fabulous throw.

Throwing Away Trash Without Throwing Trash

Many videos on twitter showed a few people collaborating to throw away trash in a spectacular way. Sadly, I was alone, and my left hand was already used to hold my phone. Therefore, I had to find a way to throw the trash with only one hand…

Although I did not like my video, some people actually said it was good, so I decided to upload this video. Here is my spectacular way to throw away trash without throwing trash… I do not know whether I can call this as magic, but I hope it looks like one. I think some people do not want to know the mechanism (or the mechanism might be obvious), so I will just leave as it is. Since there are already many great tricks on twitter, my biggest challenge was making my video creative and entertaining. It actually took me a whole day to think of this idea.

Side Quest 8: Throw a piece of paper into a bin

This is one of my favorite paper plane designs and I used to have a lot of them when I was a child. To make this paper throw more unique, the plane had an asymmetry design with smaller right wing and a hole in the middle, which makes the plane turn right after I release it. The angle to throw and speed was crucial and it took me a couple of trials before understand how this plane behaves. This assignment distracts me a bit from boring social-distancing and brings back my paper plane skills I used to have.

Side Quest 8: Future NFL Punter

For the first hometask, I chose to kick a crumbled up piece of paper into my garbage bin. One of the hardest things to do in American football is punt a football down the field because of the ball’s rotation and unique shape. A crumbled up piece of paper has no clear shape and is rough around the edges, so I figured I would try and test my skills at punting a piece of paper. I stood at the top of my stairs, dropped the piece of paper, and hit it against the wall and into my garbage bin. This throw / kick was spectacular because I had to drop the paper on a certain part of my foot to ensure it would go in the correct direction. I also had to put just enough power into the kick to make sure it ended up in the bin. This task turned out to be much more challenging than I imagined, but I did not mind it because I don’t have much else to do these days.

Side Quest 8/Hometasking 1

Due: 3/27

Tag: sq8

Now that we’re all social distancing and trapped in our homes, we’ve decided that as a community we’re going to follow along with the Taskmaster #hometasking tasks as side quests.

Your task for this sidequest is to throw a piece of paper into a bin. Most spectacular throw wins.

Post a video or gif to your website, no longer than 1 minute. Write a brief paragraph about why your throw is spectacular. Please make a special point to comment on your peers’ throws as well. On Saturday, I’ll publish a poll to vote on which was the most spectacular throw.

Side Quest 8: A Human Document

Due: 3/22

Tag: sq8

For your eighth Side Quest, you're going to play a collaborative writing game in which you collaborate with a published novelist to write a poem.

The British artist Tom Phillips is probably best known for a project that he began in 1966 and which he has continued ever since–he set himself the challenge to buy the first book he could find at a secondhand bookstore for threepence and to alter every page using drawing, painting, collage, and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version.

He found W.H. Mallock’s A Human Document and combined the words in the title to create A Humument. Phillips not only created new art works from each of the 367 pages but has now completed five different editions of this altered book.

You can view pretty much the complete series of pages on Tom Phillips site here. You can choose pages, view the original and then view different versions of that page.

For this week’s assignment, I want you to create your own visual poem-thing. You can find your own page to alter if you’d like, but I’ll bring in an old used book that you can take pages from too. Think of it as sort of a collaboration between yourself and the book’s original author or think of it as a game where you get to create new text but within the strict confines of the text available on the page.

Obviously, Tom Phillips has been doing this for almost 50 years and I’m not expecting you to produce work that is as polished or complex as his – nor that is necessarily as visually compelling. And it will probably feel very strange to you as you begin, but just let yourself be playful and experiment with your task. You do not need to be a professional artist to make these pages, but you probably do need to be able to relax your desire to be in control of what you produce and you probably need to turn off the self-critical voice that will tell you that you’re doing it wrong.

Alter your page using whatever methods or tools you prefer, then scan the page in color at a high resolution as a JPG or PNG file and load it to your site. You might or might not include in your post the text of your altered page.
